July 7, 2017- SUV And MTA Crash Injures 12 People
Earlier this month, a 58-year-old livery cab driver struck a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) bus and injured 12 people in total. The driver was headed westbound on 125th when he rear-ended the MTA bus. The Cadillac Escalade ended up mounting the sidewalk and struck two pedestrians. The driver and other bus passengers, as well as a police officer, were among the injured. The driver was the one who suffered the most injuries and he had to be extricated from his vehicle by FDNY and NYPD crews. All the victims were taken to Harlem Hospital and are expected to survive.
June 2, 2017- U.S. Navy Skydiver Dies In Parachuting Accident
A U.S. Navy skydiver died on Sunday May 28th, after his parachute malfunctioned while he was performing in an aerial exhibition. The exhibition was part of New York Harbor’s annual Fleet Week Festival. The skydiver was a member of the U.S. Navy’s elite skydiving demonstration team. He was pulled out from the water close to the mouth of the Hudson River soon after the accident happened. The accident was seen by thousands of show watchers from Liberty State Park in New Jersey City. The skydiver was pronounced dead at the Jersey City Medical Center.
May 5, 2017- Off-Duty NYPD Traffic Agent Charged With Killing Backseat Passenger
An off-duty NYPD traffic agent has been charged with killing his backseat passenger. The traffic agent was driving 111 mph when his car split in two during a terrible crash on the Williamsburg Bridge. The prosecutor reported that he had his foot “100% on the acceleration” of his Infiniti sedan which led to him losing control and crashing into a divider. The passenger in his car was celebrating her 21st birthday on the day her body split in two along with the car. Security footage obtained for the case showed that the agent had been drinking for three hours before the accident happened.
April 24, 2017- Deadly DUI Leads To Manslaughter Charge
Following a December 2016 accident in Waterford, Connecticut, a Colchester woman has been charged with DUI manslaughter. The woman was involved in a serious car crash on December 26th that resulted in a 24-year-old woman getting killed in the wreck, and other people getting injured. The woman was drunk driving and was charged with second-degree manslaughter with a motor vehicle, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol and or drugs, and reckless driving among other things. According to police reports, the driver was driving at 60 MPH in a 35 MPH zone, with a blood alcohol content that was over three times the legal limit.
March 29, 2017- Residents File Lawsuit Against Town Over Landfill Exposure
Nearly 60 residents have filed a lawsuit against the town of Wheatfield, NY including seven companies involved in dumping hazardous waste at the closed Niagara Sanitation Landfill. The lawsuits allege that the parties being sued did not do enough to solve the effects of chemicals in waste brought from the former Love Canal landfill. Complainants were concerned about contaminants such as pesticides, volatile organic compounds, and heavy metals. The plaintiffs are seeking monetary damages for personal injury and property damage, including establishing a fund for ongoing medical monitoring.
February 13, 2017- Woman Falls To Her Death At World Trade Center
A 29-year-old New Jersey woman fell almost 30 feet to her death from an escalator inside the World Trade Center Oculus. According to sources, the woman was trying to catch her twin sister’s hat which fell off while they were riding the escalator. She subsequently fell to the marble floor on the main concourse. She was transported to Bellevue hospital where she was pronounced dead. The tragic accident left questions about the safety measures that could and should have been taken such as adding safety rails or glass walls inside the center.
January 4, 2017- NYC Train Accident Leaves 100 People With Minor Injuries
On Wednesday, January 4, 2017, more than 100 people suffered minor injuries following a Long Island Rail Road train accident. The accident took place when the train hit a bumping block at Brooklyn station. According to fire officials, metal from a rail pierced the bottom of the train causing the wheels to lift up. The crash damaged a work area beyond the tracks. Eleven people were taken to different hospitals.
December 21, 2016- NY Truck Driver Charged In Accident Involving Schoolbus And Pickup
A driver driving a U.S. Xpress tractor-trailer from NYC was recently charged with failure to maintain control of his vehicle. He caused a multiple-vehicle accident that involved a Morgan County school bus as well as a pickup truck. Police charged the truck driver for hitting the pickup after the driver had stopped for a school bus dropping off students. The children on the school bus were not injured but, the driver and two passengers in the pickup truck needed medical treatment.
October 16th, 2016 – Responders Rush Car Accident Victim To Hospital
After a black Chrysler 300 smashed into a livery cab and a parked Subaru, emergency responders determined that the driver of the Chrysler was in cardiac and respiratory arrest and rushed him to the ER where he is in critical condition. An investigation has yet to determine if the cardiac arrest caused the crash. For more information on this check out New York Daily News.
